February – March

Time is moving too dang fast this year. And perhaps it’s because it’s spring or the end of another wave of cases (so everyone’s feeling freer and more plans are being made) but I’ve got so many things going on suddenly that I don’t have time to plan any of it out and end up just juggling it all at once. It’s a lot of stress but I think most of it is also pent up from two years of doing absolutely nothing so I’m not used to just plain day-to-day planning anymore.

I’ve gotten into a groove with audiobooks. For a week or so the power in my building was being worked on. So during the day as they worked I was able to get through a book a day on my phone, and started focusing more on learning guitar by downloading a few apps but also just fumbling my way through songs until I went from “C? this finger that fret and this finger this fret and… ehhh, ok… STRUM” to “C? Got it. Strum!” It’s been super fun to watch something go from bizarre symbols to understanding chord progressions and fretting. I don’t have many experiences like that in life, but it reminds me of learning languages on Duolingo and how eventually the middle part of processing just goes away. Super cool!

The other thing is I’ve definitely hit a stride with my backlog since finishing the original Bioshock, which marks the last of the PS3 games I’ve had on my backlog to finish. All that’s left of older gen games is the 3DS games, which are on my list for this year since the digital shop will be taken offline next year. And then I’m back in modern gaming! Of course with the way the gaming markets have branched off and now we not only have Steam, but itch.io, Epic Games, Amazon Prime Gaming, and more. So you don’t have to focus on the console war to get great gaming experiences. I’ve been sucked into so many great indies on itch.io and so many more I’d love to buy that I don’t think I have much triple A titles I’m looking forward to. Of course everyone’s got a few big games they love. For me that’s The Legend of Zelda. So this year, as the eShop is going offline next year, I’m making it a goal to get through all the Zelda games I never finished. Which is only about 7: A Link Between Worlds, the two Oracles, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Majora’s Mask, and Skyward Sword. Currently I’m in the middle of A Link Between Worlds which is the direct sequel to my favorite of the Zeldas, A Link to the Past and I’ve been loving knowing where everything is on the map! I wish more series kept the maps the same across games. While I love learning a game’s map and mechanics as part of onboarding in a world, sometimes it’s just nice to be back with something familiar and I think the only series that really sticks to that is Animal Crossing, and I’ve only played two of those.

So the only two media goals that have waned these last two months has been movies and TV. But I’m constantly keeping up with lots of shows that are returning for new seasons, like Picard, Atlanta, Battlebots, and others. And on Friendspire I aim to review at least one movie a week to keep my streak there going! So movies aren’t entirely forgotten.

For February and March, here are my totals:

February 2022 Goals
Movies – 21 of 8
TV – 3 of 3
Games – 3 of 3
Books – 2 of 9

March 2022 Goals
Movies – 4 of 8
TV – 2 of 3
Games – 13 of 3
Books – 2 of 9

Maybe my groove with books hasn’t been that great! But this is also the first month where movies weren’t absurdly over the goal. I don’t know if that shows I’ve lost interest in marathoning movies or if the quality of movies out there is just not on my level anymore.
